A special investigation team (SIT) on Wednesday (September 16, 2026) arrested M. Gireesh, a district secretariat member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], in connection with violence during the Chevayur bank election in November 2024.

The arrest relates to a case in which a native of Mukkom sustained serious injuries during a clash on November 16, 2024. CPI(M) branch member C.P. Jaleel was also arrested in connection with the case.

The accused have been booked under non-bailable provisions, including attempt to murder and assault involving weapons, according to the police.

The clash reportedly involved Congress worker Sirajudheen, who suffered serious injuries. Following the incident, Congress leaders lodged a complaint with the police, leading to the investigation.

The case is being investigated by the SIT constituted by the Home department. Crime Branch Superintendent of Police K. Vikraman is the team leader.
