Clarity regarding app sought from ECI

Activists and volunteers have requested clarification from the Election Commission of India regarding a third-party mobile app displaying sensitive voter data related to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Concerns have been raised about data privacy and the potential misuse of voter information.
Why it matters
The security and privacy of electoral data are critical to maintaining public trust in democratic processes.
Volunteers assisting the public with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls have sought clarification from the authorities regarding an app that is purportedly displaying SIR-related information, including the classification of an elector’s enumeration form.
According to volunteers and activists, the application is available on Google’s Play Store.
M.A. Mujeeb, an activist who has been assisting a large number of people in filling SIR enumeration forms, said there was a need for clarity on how the application was accessing voter-related information.
“Many people have been sharing screenshots of the app. Some are relieved because they believe they may not have to submit documents, while others are anxious about whether the status shown is different,” said Mr. Mujeeb, who runs Adalah, a volunteer organisation in Karimnagar.
