Why it matters
Large-scale transit disruptions in the capital highlight the escalating tensions between political opposition groups and the Election Commission.
Ahead of the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday (October 10, 2026), demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the Delhi Police have requested the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to close the entry and exit gates of 57 Metro stations across the national capital for security reasons.
The proposed protest follows a series of demonstrations in Delhi against the SIR exercise and the Chief Election Commissioner.
According to an official communication issued on Thursday (October 8, 2026), the Joint Commissioner of Police, Transport Range, requested the DMRC to take appropriate measures at identified Metro stations in view of proposed protests at Jantar Mantar and other locations in the New Delhi district. The communication cited the possibility of large crowds moving towards sensitive locations.
