Why it matters
It highlights ongoing political tensions and concerns regarding civil liberties and police surveillance during protests in India.
The Keralam wing of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has joined the protest in Delhi, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar by sending its volunteers to the national capital and organising solidarity events in the State. A group of around 20 CJP volunteers had left for Delhi from different parts of the State two days ago, according to the movement’s State leaders. They fear that members of the group could be among those detained.
“Our coordinators, volunteers and people who responded to our call on social media to join the protests are among those who have travelled to Delhi. Most of them are from Ernakulam,” Isha Mariyam Haris, a State coordinator of CJP, said. She said the team from Keralam have joined CJP volunteers from other States as per information received on Saturday even as over 3,000 protesters were detained by the Delhi police.
