City Rail Link: The long road to Auckland’s big
Auckland's City Rail Link, the largest transport infrastructure project in New Zealand's history, is set to open on September 13. The project, which has been in discussion for over a century, is expected to significantly improve rail efficiency and connectivity for the city.
Why it matters
The completion of this major infrastructure project marks a significant milestone in urban development and public transport capacity for a rapidly growing city.
It feels like Auckland is entering its big-city era.
New Zealand’s largest transport infrastructure project ever, the City Rail Link (CRL), will open to passengers on September 13.
It’s being touted as truly transformative for the country’s biggest city, which is rapidly growing.
”This is one of the most significant transport investments in New Zealand’s history and in just a few weeks, Aucklanders will finally be able to use it," Transport Minister Chris Bishop said.
He has called the project “a symbol of ambition for Auckland” and acknowledged it had come at a cost, with years of construction disrupting residents, commuters and businesses.
“It’s not London, or Paris, or Sydney ... It’s Auckland,” he posted on social media after getting a glimpse underground.
But the road to the CRL has been an incredibly long one.
