Chrononutrition Key to Postpartum Weight Loss: Study
A new study suggests that aligning eating times with a woman's daily routine, known as chrononutrition, may help with postpartum weight loss. Researchers emphasize that flexible approaches are more sustainable for mothers than traditional calorie counting.
Why it matters
It offers a practical, low-burden strategy for postpartum health management, addressing a common challenge for new mothers.
July 20, 2026 - New research has found that eating habits that align most closely with a woman's existing routine show promise for losing postpartum baby weight, especially for mothers earlier in the postpartum period. The study identified key factors impacting eating timing and perceived barriers to various chrononutrition approaches, with the ability to share a family evening meal emerging as particularly important. The findings in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (JAND), published by Elsevier, are an important step towards informing the development of chrononutrition interventions for postpartum weight management.
Most mothers fail to return to their pre-pregnancy weight after childbirth. They frequently retain this weight, or gain additional weight, which contributes to an increased risk of becoming overweight or obese, worsening cardiometabolic health, and adverse outcomes in future pregnancies.
