A Christchurch man’s sudden unexplained death has stirred up unsettling memories of a dramatic armed police standoff with a prison escaper 30 years ago.
Police were called to a Milton St house in Sydenham about 12.30pm on Sunday after a man was found unresponsive.
“CPR was commenced prior to the arrival of emergency services, however, the man could not be revived,” Detective Senior Sergeant Dan Overend said.
“The death is currently being treated as unexplained, and inquiries are underway on behalf of the coroner to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
A post-mortem examination would be conducted, Overend said.
When the Herald visited the quiet Sydenham suburb today, residents said the latest incident revived memories of a tense police operation in 1996, just 100m from the latest incident.
