A Christchurch cafe is selling what could be New Zealand’s most expensive coffee, with single cups going for $100.
Rook Cafe on Hereford St in the central city recently sourced some rare “Geisha” beans from Panama.
This morning the special beans from the renowned Mount Totumas estate in Chiriqui were being used to brew $100 cups of coffee.
The first customers, Maxwell and Tallon, split the cost of a cup, saying it was “very exciting”.
“I mean, it’s just such a rare variety from like a very specific area, from a very specific farm, and you get the trustworthiness of Kyle [Cabangun], who’s just a fantastic barista, so it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance really,” Maxwell said.
A self-confessed coffee aficionado, he has had expensive cups before, “maybe $20 to $30 per cup, but this is definitely the most expensive I’ve had”.
