“Standing room only in Christchurch!” announced Chris Hipkins as he took centre stage at a packed-out Coronation Hall in Spreydon on Monday night.
The Labour leader was right – but, in fairness, there was only seating for about 120. By 6pm, the boisterous crowd of more than 200 snaked its way out the door.
The modestly sized venue sits in the heart of an area that has moved across three strong Labour electorates – currently Wigram, previously Sydenham and soon to be Christchurch Central. It’s seen such representatives as former Prime Minister Norman Kirk, former Deputy Prime Minister Jim Anderton (across four parties), the trailblazing Mabel Howard and most recently the tireless Megan Woods. It sits left of centre on both a map of Christchurch and the political spectrum. Hipkins was undoubtedly among his people.
