China meeting likely to focus on each country’s domestic needs: expert

Add TT as Preferred Source Domestic political considerations in the US and China are likely to drive the agenda of the next meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平), a Taiwanese academic said yesterday.

National Chengchi University Institute of International Relations Director Wang Hsin-hsien (王信賢) said during a book launch in Taipei.

Both leaders sought “strategic stability” during their meeting in Beijing in May, but the outcome was closer to “tactical stability,” he said.

“It is like two boxers agreeing to take a break,” Wang said. “The break does not end the fight; it is preparation for the next round.”

The anticipated second meeting, expected to take place on Sept. 24 in Washington, should be viewed not only through the lens of bilateral relations, but also in terms of the two leaders’ domestic needs, he said.
