China has switched on 2,000 servers under the sea that nobody is allowed to touch
China has deployed a commercial underwater data center off the coast of Shanghai, utilizing seawater for cooling to improve energy efficiency. The project, which houses 2,000 servers for AI training, draws inspiration from previous Microsoft experiments that proved underwater hardware has lower failure rates.

China has switched on a commercial underwater data centre off the coast of Shanghai, dropping roughly 2,000 servers onto the seabed in the Lingang Special Area and wiring them directly into an offshore wind farm. The facility runs at 24MW, sits 10 metres below the surface and more than 10km out, and uses the surrounding seawater in place of chillers and cooling towers. It took 1.6 billion yuan of investment, roughly Rs 2,100 crore, and is a joint effort between HiCloud Technology and state-owned China Communications Construction. Commercial operations began in May, after trials in February and construction wrapping up last October.The design it borrows from belongs to Microsoft. In 2018 the company lowered a white steel cylinder the size of a shipping container 117 feet under the North Sea off the Orkney Islands, with 855 servers inside and 27.6 petabytes of storage.
