Chikkamagaluru police detain five illegal Bangladeshi immigrants near Bankal in Mudigere taluk

Chikkamagaluru police have detained five Bangladeshi nationals working as laborers at an estate in Mudigere taluk after discovering they lacked valid documentation. Authorities are now conducting a broader drive to document migrant workers across the district to ensure security and compliance.
Why it matters
The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding illegal immigration and the need for systematic tracking of migrant labor in the agricultural sector.
The Chikkamagaluru police on Monday (August 4) detained five illegal Bangladeshi immigrants who were working as daily wage labourers at an estate near Bankal in Mudigere taluk.
The police identified the immigrants while verifying documents of migrant workers at the estate and recovered Bangladesh National Identification Cards (NID cards) from them.
Jitendra Kumar Dayama, Superintendent of Police, Chikkamagaluru, said he had instructed the police to prepare a database of migrant workers in the district. “There are many estates and resorts in the district, and many people come here to work from different places. For the last two months, the police have been conducting a drive to document migrant workers,” he said.
