Why it matters
The case highlights the growing issue of online harassment against female politicians and the broader implications for gender representation in governance.
Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Mayor R. Priya said she had filed a complaint with the police against certain social media accounts, alleging that they had been subjecting her to cyberbullying.
Ms. Priya said that on Friday (July 24, 2026), she submitted a list of accounts that had been “continuously bullying” her online for nearly a year, along with the complaint, to Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Amalraj.
She added that the cyber abuse had intensified after the new government assumed office in the State. According to her, a group of “virtual warriors” had been posting obscene comments repeatedly.
