Chennai Corporation collects ₹6.60 lakh in fines from 20 Bulk Waste Generators for violations
The Greater Chennai Corporation has collected ₹6.60 lakh in fines from bulk waste generators for violating new solid waste management rules. Establishments are required to register on official portals and implement on-site waste processing to comply with the 2026 regulations.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has collected ₹6.60 lakh in fines from 120 Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) for violating Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, in 40 days till Tuesday. The Corporation has also directed all BWGs to register on its portal and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board portal, and comply with the rules.
Under the rules, buildings with a built-up area of 20,000 sq.m. or more, institutions consuming at least 40,000 litres of water a day or establishments generating solid waste of 100 kg or more a day are classified as BWGs. A release said corporate offices, hotels, hospitals, educational institutions, IT parks, marriage halls, malls, markets, and resident welfare associations are among those covered.
