Chancellor of Dar es Salaam Catholic Archdiocese Appointed Auxiliary Bishop

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Father Vincent Lawrence Mpwaji as the new Auxiliary Bishop of the Dar es Salaam Catholic Archdiocese in Tanzania. Mpwaji, who previously served as the archdiocese's chancellor, will assist Archbishop Jude Thaddaeus Ruwa’ichi.

Pope Leo XIV has appointed the Chancellor of Dar-es-Salaam Catholic Archdiocese in Tanzania, Father Vincent Lawrence Mpwaji , as Auxiliary Bishop of the East African Metropolitan See.
The appointment, made public by the Holy See on Saturday, July 11, also assigns the Bishop-elect the Titular See of Tacarata in Numidia.
Until his appointment, Bishop-elect Mpwaji served as Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam, a position he has held since 2021, while also ministering as Assistant Parish Priest of St. Joseph's Cathedral of Dar es Salaam Archdiocese.
Born in June 1978 in Tanzania's Morogoro Catholic Diocese , Bishop-elect Mpwaji studied philosophy at St. Anthony of Padua Ntungamo Major Seminary in Bukoba Diocese before undertaking theological studies at St. Charles Lwanga Segerea Major Seminary in Dar es Salaam. He was ordained a priest in July 2008.
