Centre cuts red tape to fast-track India's defence exports - what it mean

In an effort aimed to make India's defence exports more competitive, the Department of Defence Production, a part of the defence ministry has rolled out reforms to simplify the defence export Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and the Open General Export Licence (OGEL) processes. The changes are designed to cut down procedural bottlenecks and help Indian defence companies respond faster to international opportunities, all while keeping national security safeguards firmly in place.On the export SOP front, the requirement for stakeholder consultation has been done away with for most non-lethal defence item exports, barring sensitive destinations where safeguards remain untouched. The same consultation requirement has also been scrapped entirely for items being showcased at international tenders and exhibitions, a change that should let Indian firms pursue overseas business more quickly rather than getting stuck in procedural queues.The bigger overhaul, however, comes on the OGEL side.
