The Indian Union Ministry of Tourism has approved a Rs 93.94-crore project to redevelop the historic Maharaja Ajj Sarovar in Punjab. The initiative aims to transform the site into a major heritage and tourism destination under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme.
Why it matters
This project highlights government investment in cultural preservation and religious tourism infrastructure, which is a key driver for local economic development in India.
The Union Ministry of Tourism has approved a ₹93.94 crore project for the rejuvenation and redevelopment of the historic Maharaja Ajj Sarovar at Kharar in Punjab’s Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, paving the way for its transformation into a major heritage and tourism destination in Punjab.
The project approval follows several rounds of consultations between the Punjab government and the Centre. Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, who visited the site earlier this year for the inauguration of a Ram temple on the banks of the Sarovar, had pursued the proposal with the Union Ministry of Tourism. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann also supported the initiative by directing officials to prepare and submit a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for consideration by the Ministry.
