ARUSHA: WIDE cattle price disparities across the country major markets are creating different return prospects for producers and traders.
The Tanzania Meat Board (TMB) data show that average prices for larger cattle ranged from 1.75m/- to 3.5m/- at the end of September with seven markets trading a combined 2,594 cattle.
Themi market in Arusha recorded the highest average price at 3.5m/- for cattle weighing about 300 kilogrammes, followed by Mutukula in Kagera at 2.8m/- for animals averaging 380 kilogrammes and Kizota in Dodoma at 2.5m/- for cattle weighing about 355 kilogrammes.
At the lower end, Wereweru in Kilimanjaro recorded 1.75m/- for cattle averaging 567 kilogrammes, while Mhunze in Shinyanga and Wasso in Loliondo, Arusha, each recorded 1.8m/- for animals weighing about 200 kilogrammes and 380 kilogrammes, respectively.
