PRODUCTION of carabao, cattle and goat declined in the second quarter from the previous year, while farmgate prices increased, according to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).Carabao production from April to June fell 6.6 percent to 29,810 metric tons (MT) liveweight, from 31,940 MT in the same period last year.Carabao inventory also dropped. As of June 30, the country's carabao population was estimated at 2.40 million heads, down 3 percent from 2.62 million a year earlier.Northern Mindanao was the top carabao-producing region with 3,240 MT, accounting for 11.5 percent of total output during the quarter.Next was Eastern Visayas with 3,101 MT; Negros Island Region, 2,360 MT; Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, 2,090 MT; and Calabarzon, 1,990 MT.These five regions accounted for 43.5 percent of total carabao production.Despite lower output, the average farmgate price of carabao for slaughter rose 4.7 percent to P201.08 per kilogram liveweight, from P192.04 a…
