Two people are in a critical condition and eight others have been injured after a car ploughed into a crowd gathered for the Newcastle Knights grand final procession in New South Wales.

Australian police arrested the driver of the car at the scene shortly after the crash on Newcastle Link Road in the town of Wallsend, in Newcastle's west, about 9.30am Saturday local time (12:30pm NZT).

NSW police said three girls under six years old had been injured, as well as seven adults.

Of those, a five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man were in critical condition. The others were in a stable condition and being treated for their injuries in hospital.

NSW Police said Newcastle Link Road was closed in both directions while investigations continued.
