Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has announced the city’s plans to transform the now-iconic unfinished highways into a new link bridge, promenade, and a new neighbourhood.

Flanked by Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde and Transnet CEO Michelle Phillips on Friday, Hill-Lewis said: “The project will transform Cape Town’s unfinished highways into a new link bridge and tunnel to relieve inner-city congestion and fix the connection between the Foreshore and Atlantic Seaboard.

“And most importantly, over the decades ahead, a brand-new vibrant Foreshore neighbourhood will be unlocked, including affordable housing, walkable streets, and a tree-lined promenade along the harbour’s edge all the way to Sea Point.”

This new neighbourhood is expected to be built on the 15 hectares of land surrounding the unfinished highways, which have remained undeveloped for more than half a century.
