Candlelighters chair shares why awareness still matters

During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Support Group is highlighting the emotional and community support needed by families affected by pediatric cancer in Manitoba. The organization emphasizes the importance of peer support for families navigating the diagnosis and treatment process.
Why it matters
It raises awareness about the prevalence of childhood cancer and the critical role of support networks in helping families cope with the diagnosis.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Support Group (CCCSG) is using the month to remind Manitobans that childhood cancer affects dozens of families across the province every year.
Naomi Fehr, board chairperson of Candlelighters, said childhood cancer is often viewed as rare, but it remains a reality for many Manitoba families.
"It's something that probably isn't talked about enough and as rare as childhood cancer seems to be, it's not that rare in our world," Fehr said.
According to Fehr, about 50 Manitoba children are diagnosed with cancer each year. Last year, Candlelighters supported 39 families across the province.
"The number is 39 too many," she said. "We wish we didn't have to exist."
Fehr said September provides an opportunity not only to raise awareness, but also to educate people about the challenges families face after receiving a diagnosis.
