Canal restoration to be expedited to curb waterlogging in Kochi
Kochi authorities are accelerating canal restoration and drainage cleaning projects under 'Operation Breakthrough' to mitigate urban waterlogging. The plan includes stricter enforcement against illegal waste dumping and single-use plastics.

In a bid to prevent waterlogging in the city, the restoration of various canals will be expedited. Restoration work on the Mullassery Canal will also resume on September 1 and is expected to be completed by March. The decisions were taken at a review meeting of ‘Operation Breakthrough’ chaired by District Collector G. Priyanka.
Directions were issued to the Kochi Corporation Secretary to intensify inspections to identify the sources of banned single-use plastic products and impose fines on violators. The meeting also noted that the cleaning of the mouth of T.P. Canal has been completed and that the Public Works Department (PWD) has completed work to address waterlogging issues in the High Court area.
