'Can be executed': Bangladesh MP after Sheikh Hasina confirms she will return to Dhaka
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced her intention to return to Dhaka from India to face potential legal proceedings. Her return remains a contentious issue amid ongoing political instability and hostility from the current interim government.
Why it matters
The return of a former leader facing a death sentence carries significant implications for regional stability and diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh.
DHAKA: Former Bangladesh PM and chief of banned Awami League Sheikh Hasina, who was sentenced to death back home, announced Friday she and her party colleagues plan to return to Dhaka "voluntarily" around Dec and surrender."They may arrest me on my return, they may even kill me," Sheikh Hasina told new agency Reuters. "Still, I have to go," the 78-year-old told the news agency, even as sources in the Tarique Rahman-led BNP govt sought to downplay her statements, saying it is her call.
