Camera traps installed in Sirumugai forest for tiger survey
Forest officials have begun installing camera traps in the Sirumugai forest range as part of the All India Tiger Estimation 2026. The project aims to document tiger populations and wildlife movement to aid in conservation efforts.
Why it matters
It is a critical step in biodiversity monitoring and the protection of endangered species in India.
Installation of Camera traps began on Saturday (August 8) in the Sirumugai forest range of the Coimbatore Forest Division under the Anamalai Tiger Reserve as part of Phase III of the All India Tiger Estimation 2026.
Sirumugai Forest Range Officer T. Dinesh is supervising the exercise. Automated cameras were being installed at identified locations to photograph and document tigers and other wildlife.
The photographs will help Forest officials record the presence and movement of wildlife in the forest range as part of the estimation exercise.
