Why it matters
Agricultural competitions are vital for industry standards and provide producers with data-driven insights to improve livestock quality and market competitiveness.
About 140 people turned out for the 38th annual Callide Dawson Beef Carcase competition awards dinner. The dinner held at the Anzac Memorial Club, Biloela, on Friday, July 10, is always a well-attended event where it's a case of first-in, best-dressed to get a ticket. This year, the total number of entries in the carcase competition was 871 compared to 853 in 2025. There were 471 entries in the grain-fed section this year compared to 434 last year and 400 in the grass-fed category as against 419 last year. Competition committee president and cattle co-ordinator Michele Goody said it would not be long before they saw entries reach 1000. "Even with Beef happening next year, we'll still get a really good roll-up of cattle and exhibitors to the competition," she said. "Producers are just seeing how good it is to use the competition ... to see how their carcases line up against other people's."
