Call for Trump-Xi AI safety talks comes as state media slams US AI governance

An OpenAI executive is advocating for US-China AI safety cooperation ahead of a high-level summit. Meanwhile, Chinese state media has criticized American AI governance and the lobbying efforts of companies like Anthropic.
Why it matters
Geopolitical tensions regarding AI regulation could impact global technological standards and the future of international safety protocols.
An OpenAI executive and former White House adviser is calling for AI safety cooperation between Washington and Beijing ahead of a summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, even as Chinese state media launch a scathing attack on American frontier governance in artificial intelligence.
“I have always believed US/China AI safety collaboration would be desirable but thought it was unlikely to happen,” Dean Ball, OpenAI’s head of strategic futures, wrote on X on Tuesday. “In the past few months, though, the ground has shifted. There is a window of opportunity.”
Ball, a former adviser to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said the window for cooperation would “widen over at least the next few months” because of escalating AI risks and the upcoming bilateral meeting, but warned it “will not remain open forever”.
