CAF President proud of Africa's World Cup display; announces massive Wafcon prize increase

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe praised the performance of African national teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, noting that 90 percent of them advanced to the knockout stages. He also announced a significant increase in prize money for the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon).
Why it matters
The success of African teams on the global stage and increased investment in women's football reflect the growing influence and professionalization of the sport in Africa.
The President of the Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”), Dr Patrice Motsepe said on Wednesday that he was proud of the performances of the national teams of the 10 African countries at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Africa was represented by Algeria, Cabo Verde, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia.
Nine of the 10 African national teams, which is 90 per cent, qualified from the Group Stage to the Round of 32 (Knockout Stage).
This is remarkable as it is the highest per centage in the history of this competition.
Africa represented 20.8 per cent of the 48 national teams that participated in the World Cup but constituted 28.1 per cent of the national teams that qualified from the Group Stage to the Round of 32.
