Highlights the growing labor tensions in the gig economy and the struggle for regulatory protections for platform-based workers.
Cabbies and other gig workers represented by a clutch of platform-based worker unions have threatened to go on an indefinite strike in Hyderabad from Saturday (August 8, 2026). They have issued a set of demands, including that the government notify a minimum base fare, a per kilometre fare, and per minute fare.
The unions, including the Indian National Trade Union Congress Federation, the Indian Labour Welfare Federation, the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, and the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU), came together to take this decision. They stated that it was aimed at ensuring fair wages for drivers engaged in both passenger transport and delivery services.
Another key demand is that the government notify the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Rules.
