A British national has been arrested after allegedly punching two Customs officers during a desperate escape bid as authorities began uncovering nearly 17kg of methamphetamine in his luggage.
The 24-year-old arrived at Auckland International Airport on a flight from New York City last Friday.
A Customs spokesperson said he was referred for a baggage search, where officers discovered nine vacuum-sealed packages filled with an opaque, crystallised substance.
The bags were found to contain 16.8kg of the Class A-controlled drug methamphetamine, which carried an estimated street value of $5 million.
Before the search, the man tried to leave the designated area and officers instructed him to remain where he was, said the spokesperson.
He then attempted to flee, allegedly punching a Customs officer in the process.
A second officer was allegedly punched while the man was being restrained.
