A popular West Auckland restaurant and bar has shut its doors after a “horrific and violent” armed daylight robbery that left staff “very shaken”.

Bricklane Restaurant & Bar in New Lynn has closed “until further notice” after a man wielding an “extremely large machete” robbed the business and assaulted a manager.

The Trusts chief executive Allan Pollard, whose organisation owns the business, confirmed to the Herald that “an armed offender who had an extremely large machete came into the bar” about 3.20pm yesterday.

“He proceeded to go behind the bar,” Pollard said. “He used the machete and he smashed the till with the machete. He then assaulted one of the staff forcefully by pushing them.”

Pollard said the man tried to get money from the till, but was unsuccessful “because when he hit it with the machete, he basically locked the whole system”.
