Brazil is actively seeking to expand trade ties with Southeast Asia following the implementation of the Mercosur-Singapore free trade agreement. ApexBrasil is considering increasing its physical presence in the region, which has become a major export market for Brazilian goods.
Why it matters
The shift highlights Brazil's strategic pivot toward diversifying its export markets beyond traditional partners like Mercosur.
After the Mercosur-Singapore free trade agreement entered into force earlier this month, the Brazilian government is seeking to expand the country’s presence in Southeast Asia, Laudemir André Müller , president of the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency ( ApexBrasil ), told Valor .
ApexBrasil is affiliated with Brazil’s Ministry of Development, Industry, Foreign Trade, and Services (MDIC) and is responsible for promoting Brazilian products and services abroad and attracting foreign investment to strategic sectors of the economy. The agency currently has one office in China and another in Singapore, the latter focused on the cotton sector. Müller said ApexBrasil is now studying whether to expand its physical presence in the region, one of the priorities of his administration.
