Bournemouth University study aims to cut veterans' dementia risk

A new study could help reduce the risk of veterans developing dementia.

The SERVED project, run by Bournemouth University's Ageing and Dementia Research Centre, is working with veterans to raise awareness of brain health risks and improve support.

Associate Professor Michele Board, who is leading the research, said veterans could be at greater risk due to their exposure to dangerous environments and traumatic events.

Previous research suggests about 45% of dementia cases worldwide could potentially be prevented or delayed through lifestyle changes.

Through a series of workshops, veterans with dementia were invited to talk about their experiences in the military and their lives since leaving service.

The research found many were at risk of being isolated later in life due to the impact of their work on relationships.
