Botswana Turns To London Capital Markets To Finance Its Next Chapter Of Growth

(3 Minutes Read) Botswana is seeking to broaden the foundations of its economy beyond diamonds, which have historically generated the overwhelming majority of the country’s export earnings. As global demand for the gemstone remains subject to cyclical pressures, the government is positioning its financial markets, private sector and priority growth industries to attract greater international investment. The strategy is being advanced through the country’s National Development Plan 12 (NDP 12), a five-year development framework running to 2030. Botswana’s Vice President and Finance Minister, Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe, will lead a government delegation to the London Stock Exchange on 18 September, where he is scheduled to open trading as part of Botswana Day in London. The appearance is intended to strengthen Botswana’s engagement with international investors as the government seeks to expand its investor base and reduce the economy’s long-standing dependence on diamond revenues.
