The body of a woman believed to be missing bushwalker Lily Hooper has been found in bushland in the NSW Southern Highlands.

The NSW premier has apologised for initially telling parliament the 18-year-old had been found alive, before confirming the "terrible news".

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

A body believed to be that of Ms Hooper was located in bushland about 11:30am today.

Police said that while the body was yet to be formally identified, it was believed to be that of the missing 18-year-old.
