Blocked routes and repeated detentions mark SIR protest in Delhi
Delhi police detained numerous student activists and political leaders who were protesting against alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision process. The protesters, including members of AISA, SFI, and NSUI, were blocked from reaching Jantar Mantar.
Why it matters
The event highlights tensions between student-led political movements and state authorities regarding democratic transparency and the right to protest.
Students and activists attempting to march to Jantar Mantar were detained at multiple points in central Delhi on Friday as the police barricaded most roads leading to the protest site. Several protesters who managed to get out of police buses were detained again as they tried to continue the demonstration.
The protest, called for Gandhi Jayanti by several student and youth organisations, political leaders and civil-society activists, was over alleged irregularities in the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The protesters sought the resignation and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Among the organisations that gave the call were the All India Students’ Association (AISA), Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI).
