Salt producers and workers on Monday staged a black flag protest in Thoothukudi, opposing the proposed construction of a shipbuilding yard in the district.
A major part of the land announced for acquisition was government poramboke land, which was leased to salt producers at a minimal cost. However, after announcement of the project, salt producers and some workers, had been organising a series of protests opposing the project.
On Monday, salt producers and workers entered the salt pans at Kovalam and held a black flag protest, urging the authorities not to destroy the salt pans for the proposed shipping yard.
