BJP's Mission UP: Drop 100 MLAs, Repair Internal Rifts, Focus On Voters

The BJP is planning a major overhaul of its candidate selection process for upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections following a poor performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The party intends to replace underperforming sitting MLAs and address internal leadership rifts to regain electoral ground.
Why it matters
As the ruling party in India's most populous state, the BJP's internal restructuring reflects a critical shift in strategy to combat anti-incumbency and internal factionalism.
The BJP is set to exercise extreme caution regarding ticket distribution for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. According to party leaders, tickets will be allocated on the basis of a consensus among the top leadership. Only candidates with a strong chance of winning - determined through surveys - will be fielded. There will be no leniency in denying tickets to sitting MLAs who are facing an anti-incumbency wave. The BJP had to pay a heavy price in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections due to infighting among top leaders over ticket distribution. While the party had won 62 of the 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh in 2019, it managed to secure only 36 seats in 2024.
