BJP protests exclusion of Kalaburagi from drought-hit list
The BJP in Kalaburagi is protesting the state government's decision to exclude the district from the official drought-hit list. Local leaders argue that rainfall deficits and poor crop sowing data justify immediate government intervention.
Why it matters
Drought classification determines the allocation of disaster relief funds and agricultural support, making it a critical issue for rural livelihoods and political accountability.
Criticising the State government for leaving Kalaburagi out of the drought-affected areas list despite a severe rainfall deficit, the BJP will stage a protest in the city on Wednesday and has given the State government eight days deadline to declare the district drought-hit, failing which it has threatened a ‘Kalaburagi bandh’.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, former MLA Rajkumar Patil Telkur and former MP Umesh Jadhav alleged that officials had failed to conduct a proper ground assessment by visiting the taluks and instead had prepared an erroneous report from their offices.
Mr. Telkur accused the three Ministers from Kalaburagi district of failing to secure its inclusion on the drought-hit list. He alleged that the Ministers were more concerned about securing a place in the first round of the proposed Cabinet expansion than addressing the distress of farmers.
