Why it matters
The incident underscores the intersection of gender politics and partisan conflict in India, highlighting the pressure on political parties to address misconduct allegations.
The police have detained some members of the BJP Mahila Morcha who tried to barge into the Congress office in Belagavi on Monday, during a protest rally against Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, Congress MP, who is facing charges of sexual harassment.
Protesters alleged that Mr. Akoijam, a former JNU professor, was facing charges from 11 female students who had filed complaints against him. However, Congress leaders were protecting him, they said.
They alleged that the Congress was following a policy of double standards on the issue of women’s respect and safety. They demanded that the Congress leadership clarify its stand in the wake of reports of allegations of sexual harassment against the MP. The Congress, which raises slogans like ‘Ladki Hoon, Lad Sakti Hoon’, should show its commitment to the respect and safety of women, they said.
