BJP faces crisis in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation as councillor R. Sreelekha mulls resignation

The BJP in Thiruvananthapuram faces internal instability as a senior councillor reportedly considers resigning, potentially threatening the party's slim majority in the municipal corporation. While the Mayor downplayed the situation, the uncertainty highlights ongoing friction within the local party leadership.
Why it matters
Local political instability can disrupt municipal governance and shift the balance of power in city administration.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is in power in the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation, was plunged into a fresh crisis on Saturday with party State vice president R. Sreelekha reportedly expressing her desire to quit as Sasthamangalam ward councillor.
However, Mayor V.V. Rajesh tried to downplay the development, saying Ms. Sreelekha had only handed over a letter expressing personal inconveniences. He did not confirm if the letter communicated her resignation, saying a councillor has to submit a letter of resignation to the Corporation Secretary.
Ms. Sreelekha had earlier protested not being considered for the post of Mayor. While she contested the State Assembly election from the Vattiyurkavu constituency, she finished third.
