BJP alleges HC order violation over Kozhikode Corporation’s resolution against CEC

The BJP has accused the Kozhikode Corporation of violating a High Court order by passing a resolution against the Chief Election Commissioner. The party claims the resolution exceeds the Corporation's administrative jurisdiction and plans to take legal action.
Why it matters
The dispute highlights the friction between local municipal governance and national political oversight, as well as the limits of local legislative power.
Accusing the Kozhikode Corporation Council of violating a High Court order by passing a resolution demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has vowed to pursue legal action.
In a statement, BJP Kozhikode city district president K.P. Prakash Babu said the High Court had issued an order in 2023 on resolutions moved in the Corporation Council, following a petition filed by Navya Haridas, then BJP council party leader and a sitting councillor.
Mr. Babu said that under Rule 18(4)(m) of the Kerala Municipality Rules, 1995, resolutions moved in the council should fall within the Corporation’s administrative jurisdiction, and national issues could not be taken up through such resolutions, the court had ruled.
