Bills to allow municipalities to take over private streets, drains tabled in Karnataka Assembly

The Karnataka Municipalities (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Karnataka Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which seek to empower commissioners to take over private streets and drains if they are in poor condition and pose a threat to public safety and health, were tabled in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.
The Bills, tabled by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, prevent erstwhile landowners from claiming compensation or a Development Rights Certificate for lands on which such streets and drains have been built.
