Bharathiar University mulls exclusive hostel for transgender students

At present, there are a couple of transgender students pursuing post-graduation in the university. The university has learnt that they faced an ordeal in finding private accommodation outside the campus. Landlords are wary of renting out their buildings, they have been complaining.
An exclusive hostel for transgenders would prompt other higher educational institutions to follow suit, Registrar R. Rajavel said. The proposal for the exclusive building for transgender students will be placed before the Syndicate, he added.
In Coimbatore district, Kongunadu Arts and Science College was the first to make the campus environment friendly for transgender students and faculty.
The college management waives tuition fee for transgender students and has established restrooms for them.
