Bezzecchi smashes San Marino lap record to take pole ahead of Marquez
Marco Bezzecchi set a new lap record at the Misano circuit to secure pole position for the San Marino Grand Prix. He will start on the front row alongside Marc Marquez and Fermin Aldeguer.
Why it matters
This result significantly impacts the MotoGP championship standings, as the top contenders continue to battle for the title in the final stages of the season.
MISANO, Italy, Sept 12 - Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi fired a warning to his MotoGP championship rivals by breaking the all-time lap record at his home track of Misano on Saturday to take pole position for the San Marino Grand Prix ahead of Ducati's Marc Marquez.
Bezzecchi became the first rider to break the one minute and 30 seconds barrier, clocking 1:29.982 to give Aprilia pole on the team's home turf.
"It was a good lap, I'm happy because the qualifying wasn't easy. I met a lot of yellow flags and it was difficult to find the concentration," Bezzecchi said.
"In the first stint I stayed on the track one lap more just to have a lap time and fortunately it was my best one because in the second stint I couldn't have a clean lap."
