Beyond the headlines: Gaza border city opens its doors to visitors

Sderot will open its doors this summer to tourists and international visitors to experience the city through the stories of its residents, offering a perspective on the Gaza border city that goes beyond the headlines. The English-language program, titled "Discover the Heart of Israel," will take place on Tuesday, August 11, and will include a guided city tour, a communal lunch and an activity with local children. Organizers say the goal is to move beyond distant expressions of support and create direct ties between visitors and the local community. Longtime residents will lead participants through the city, sharing personal stories and describing Sderot from their own perspective. The tour will be followed by lunch at Café Chico, near the Shilo Lookout, which was established in memory of Capt. Shilo "Chico" Cohen, who was killed in service and recognized for his heroism. The day will conclude with a joint activity involving children from Sderot. The initiative is intended to show visitors a side of the city that is rarely reflected in news reports: a community continuing to remember, recover and rebuild. "For a long time, the support we received from Israel and around the world gave us real strength during our most difficult moments," said Yaniv Tzabari, CEO of the Reut nonprofit organization, which is leading the initiative. "Now, as Sderot rebuilds and grows, we want to open our doors, thank people personally and introduce them to the strong, vibrant community taking shape here," he said. "This is more than a tour.
