Beyond Fort St. George: Tamil Nadu government’s quest for an Assembly-Secretariat site is more than a century old
The Tamil Nadu government is searching for a new site for its Assembly-Secretariat complex, continuing a historical trend that dates back over a century. Despite various proposals to move the legislature away from the colonial-era Fort St. George, the government has historically returned to the site.

The search for a suitable site for the Tamil Nadu Assembly-Secretariat complex – now being carried out by the incumbent Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led regime – has a very long history. Various sites were identified, and the legislature was even shifted to a couple of locations outside Fort St. George in the last 105-odd years. Somehow, the Fort had such an appeal that the legislature kept coming back to the historic 17th-century vestige of the colonial era.
