Mike: He had a great season last year but was not in the team for quite a while in the year before and perhaps has peaked skills-wise. Turning down a contract means he's probably already been tapped up, so best let him go for a large sum and then replace him with someone who wants to play for us. He did well but time to move on. He could fall over tomorrow and break a leg so best take the money now and replace - plenty more where he came from.
