Bengaluru’s Johnson market: Years of planning, no blueprint yet
The redevelopment of Bengaluru's historic Johnson Market remains stalled due to a lack of a detailed project report and disagreements among traders. While some support modernization, others argue for preserving the existing structure and improving basic infrastructure instead of demolition.
Why it matters
It highlights the tension between urban development, heritage preservation, and the livelihoods of small-scale traders in rapidly growing Indian cities.
Much like its century-old existence, the long-pending redevelopment of Johnson Market has remained stuck. A redevelopment plan has been proposed again this year, but it has not yet progressed to the detailed project report (DPR) stage, leaving little clarity on what the proposed market will look like or how its existing traders will be accommodated.
In its maiden budget this year, the Central Corporation said it would take up the redevelopment of markets that had fallen into disrepair while preserving their local character. It allocated ₹90 crore for market development, including ₹20 crore for three markets — Johnson market, K.R. Market and Kalasipalya Market.
