Bengaluru City Police to be restructured on GBA lines?

The Karnataka government is considering restructuring the Bengaluru City Police to align with the new Greater Bengaluru Authority structure. The proposal involves splitting the force into five commissionerates to improve administrative decentralization.
Why it matters
Restructuring a major metropolitan police force impacts public safety governance and administrative efficiency in one of India's largest cities.
Close to a year after the Karnataka government restructured Bengaluru’s civic governance with multiple corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), it is all set to restructure the Bengaluru City Police (BCP) on the same lines, according to sources.
Under the proposed system, the BCP will likely be split into five police commissionerates roughly congruent with the boundaries of the five city corporations and will be headed by a Chief Police Commissioner at the city level, like the GBA.
The BCP is also expected to receive a boost with over 6,000 new additional sanctioned posts and over ₹700 crore funds, the sources said.
Home Minister Priyank Kharge told The Hindu that the pros and cons of the proposal are still being studied, and a final decision is yet to be taken. He, however, added that a restructuring exercise was likely soon.
